The program begins with six teacher-led sessions which explore challenges and stress, coping and resilience through class based activities.
Following engagement with the teacher-led tasks, students work in Reading Circles. After reading an age-appropriate novel, they work with their peers to consider the challenges faced by key characters, identifying the coping strategies used and developing alternative or additional strategies.
Secondary School Unit
Following a focus on writing within specific genres and for particular audiences, students research the theme of change and loss and work on group and individual writing tasks. A series of 10 tasks culminate in the development of picture story-books for young readers which address the theme of coping with change and loss. As students complete individual and small group tasks they develop both literacy and social competency skills, as well as enhancing their own coping resources.
